Percentage Decrease Calculator

Measure the percentage reduction from an original value to a new value.

Quick guide

How to use the Percentage Decrease Calculator

  1. Enter or choose original value, new value.
  2. Select Calculate decrease.
  3. Review the main result, supporting details, and calculation method.
  4. Copy the result or download generated files when that option is available.

What this tool does

Measure how much a value fell relative to its original amount. Percentage decrease uses the original value as the baseline, which makes it different from simply subtracting the two numbers.

Calculation method

  1. Subtract the new value from the original value to find the absolute decrease.
  2. Divide that decrease by the original value.
  3. Multiply by 100 to express the relative decrease as a percentage.

Example: decrease from 250 to 200

Input: Original value: 250; New value: 200

Result: Decrease: 50; Percentage decrease: 20%

The absolute change is 50, and 50 ÷ 250 × 100 = 20 percent. The original value of 250 is the comparison baseline.

Practical uses

  • Price reductions
  • Traffic or revenue reporting
  • Weight or measurement changes
  • Budget comparisons

Accuracy tips and common mistakes

  • The original value cannot be zero because it is the denominator.
  • If the new value is higher, the result represents an increase rather than a decrease.
  • Reversing the two values changes the percentage because the baseline changes.
Frequently Asked

Percentage Decrease Calculator – Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions, edge-cases, and mathematical explanations.

Why is a decrease from 100 to 50 not reversed by a 50% increase?

A 50% decrease uses 100 as the baseline, while the increase back to 100 uses 50. Returning from 50 to 100 requires a 100% increase.

Can percentage decrease be more than 100%?

It can when the new value crosses below zero. For ordinary nonnegative quantities, a drop to zero is a 100% decrease.
