Ratio Calculator

Simplify ratios or solve an equivalent proportion with one missing value.

Quick guide

How to use the Ratio Calculator

  1. Enter or choose a, b, c, d (leave blank to solve).
  2. Select Solve ratio.
  3. Review the main result, supporting details, and calculation method.
  4. Copy the result or download generated files when that option is available.

What this tool does

Simplify a ratio or solve an equivalent proportion. Simplification divides both terms by their greatest common divisor; proportion mode uses cross-multiplication to find the missing fourth value.

Calculation method

  1. Validate the supplied ratio terms and identify whether a proportion value is missing.
  2. For simplification, divide both terms by their greatest common divisor.
  3. For a proportion a:b = c:d, solve the missing value while preserving equal cross-products.

Example: solve 4:6 = 10:d

Input: A: 4; B: 6; C: 10; D: blank

Result: Missing value: D = 15

Cross-multiplication gives 4 × d = 6 × 10. Therefore d = 60 ÷ 4 = 15.

Practical uses

  • Recipe scaling
  • Map and model scales
  • Equivalent fractions
  • Mixture comparisons

Accuracy tips and common mistakes

  • Keep units consistent before comparing quantities.
  • A zero term can make division-based proportions undefined.
  • A simplified ratio describes relative size, not the original total.
Frequently Asked

Ratio Calculator – Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions, edge-cases, and mathematical explanations.

What is the simplest form of 12:18?

The greatest common divisor is 6, so dividing both terms by 6 gives 2:3.

Is a ratio the same as a fraction?

Both compare quantities and can be manipulated similarly, but a ratio may compare part-to-part while a fraction often describes part-to-whole.

Is the Ratio Calculator free?

Yes. WebToolDock tools are free to use and do not require an account.

Does my information leave this device?

No. The calculation runs in your browser and the values are not submitted to WebToolDock.
