Quick guide
How to use the Rounding Calculator
- Enter or choose number, decimal places.
- Select Round number.
- Review the main result, supporting details, and calculation method.
- Copy the result or download generated files when that option is available.
What this tool does
Round a number to a chosen number of decimal places. The calculator shifts the target digit into the units position, applies standard nearest-value rounding, and shifts the result back.
Calculation method
- Choose the number of digits to retain after the decimal point.
- Inspect the next digit: 5 or greater rounds the retained digit away from the lower magnitude; below 5 leaves it unchanged.
- Return the rounded value at the selected precision.
Example: round 123.4567 to two decimal places
Input: Number: 123.4567; Decimal places: 2
Result: Rounded value: 123.46
The hundredths digit is 5 and the next digit is 6, so the hundredths digit rounds up to 6.
Practical uses
- Reporting measurements
- Financial estimates
- Preparing tables
- Checking homework
Accuracy tips and common mistakes
- Round at the end of a multi-step calculation to reduce accumulated error.
- A displayed trailing zero may communicate precision even though it does not change numeric value.
- Financial and scientific standards may specify a different tie-breaking method.
