Quick guide
How to use the Random Group Generator
- Enter or choose names or items (one per line), number of groups.
- Select Create groups.
- Review the main result, supporting details, and calculation method.
- Copy the result or download generated files when that option is available.
What this tool does
Paste one participant or item per line and split the shuffled list into balanced groups. The tool uses a Fisher–Yates shuffle backed by the browser cryptography API, then distributes entries so group sizes differ by no more than one.
Calculation method
- Trim blank lines and create one clean entry for each submitted name or item.
- Shuffle the full list with unbiased browser-generated random indexes.
- Distribute the shuffled entries across the requested number of groups as evenly as possible.
Example: ten people into three groups
Input: 10 names; Number of groups: 3
Result: Two groups of 3 and one group of 4
Ten cannot be divided evenly by three, so one group receives the single remaining participant. The actual membership changes with every shuffle.
Practical uses
- Classroom teams
- Workshop breakout groups
- Tournament pools
- Random task assignments
Accuracy tips and common mistakes
- Remove accidental duplicate names before generating if each person should appear once.
- Use at least two groups and no more groups than useful participants.
- For repeatable records, copy the generated groups before running another shuffle.
